Sildenafil and tadalafil are oral, prescription medicines that are FDA approved to treat erectile dysfunction. Both belong to a group of medications called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which treat ED by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.
Sildenafil is taken about one hour before sexual activity and its effects last four to six hours. Tadalafil can be taken up to 36 hours before sexual activity and is therefore often known as the “weekender.” Daily tadalafil at a lower dose is also an option, giving you the ability to obtain an erection without timing a dose to match expected activity. These medications do not automatically cause an erection — sexual stimulation is still required.
Sildenafil takes effect in roughly 30 to 60 minutes and lasts four to six hours.
Tadalafil works within an hour and can remain effective up to 36 hours.
Low-dose daily tadalafil removes the need to time a dose to expected activity.
